I am a Treasured Friends volunteer and every Saturday, I come to Petsmart to hold a dog's leash and talk to people about adopting. I am allergic to cats, so I don't interact with them very much.
I became aware of Dora because she was in the bottom, corner cage, most Saturdays. I would pass by with a dog on a leash. Once in awhile, she was forced to take notice of a dog. If it was a puppy and it lunged at the cage, she ignored it. If it was a dog, she would stand on her toes and hiss but she did not usually fluff up or give way. It seemed she knew she was safe in her space. There was one dog, she would hiss, spit, fluff up and even try to scratch! This dog was labeled as not liking cats and the feeling was apperently mutual. She was a great judge of character.
Finally, a maan came in and saw Dora. Lots of people have seen her but he looked at her in that special way. He had just lost his cat and came to Petsmart, specifically to get a cat. He passed all the adorable , active kittens and found Dora patiently waiting in the bottom, corner cage. He saw how self-assured she was and picked her to adopt. I am very glad he appreciated her sweet nature and adopted her.
Next week,I will return to Petsmart because I know there will be a new cat in the bottom, corner cage. There are always sweet, patient cats and kittens on our waiting list. The important point is Dora will not be waiting. I am happy it was her time to be adopted and my well wishes and a small prayer go with her. She had waited long enough in the corner, bottom cage for her Forever Home!

Here is an Email we just got in, that I would like to share. Walter came in in very bad shape, his coat was matted and he was full of fleas. This is made all the more sad in that he was about 8-10 years old, and such a happy little guy. I have a special place in my heart for the small dogs, I am so happy he got a good home.
Hi,
Walter is doing extremely well. He went to the groomers on the
4th and was cleaned up as well as given an oatmeal soak. With his new
do and nails trimmed he is getting around a whole lot better. I have
attached some photos! Once again thank you for the gift of Wally, he
is loved.

Congratulations Joan for being selected as President of Treasured Friends. You fostered our twin male cats before we seen them & adopted them. Thank you for nursing them back to healthy cats so we could adopt them. They now weigh 14 1/2 lbs and are very healthy. They are spoiled rotten and worth it. Moose has a white tip on his tail & Rocky has a black tip on his tail & that is how we know who is who. They are such a pleasure. Very friendly & very good cats. They are also very close with each other. We have recommended Treasured Friends at Pet Smart many times. Everyone goes out of their way to help you. Keep up the good work. Thank you for doing this for the animals & making so many people happy with great pets. Sharon & Bill S.

Our president Joan would like to share an email from a recent adoptive parent.
Hi Joan,
Sybil has been with us for 4 weeks now. She is doing very well. She eats a full bowl of dry food and
some moist food each day. She likes to walk on our pillows in the middle of the night to get
attention and cuddle up by our side purring, and falling asleep. Attached are 2 of her recent pictures,
Thank you so much for letting us adopt Sybil.

This letter was pulled out of the archives, I hope everyone enjoyes it.
Treasured Friends:
I am writing in response to a letter that was sent out some time
ago requesting stories from adoptive parents. I have also attached
pictures of our adopted dog, Mya.
Two
years ago, my now husband, and I decided we wanted to bring a dog into
our home. My husband had never had an animal before and I always had
animals growing up. This was a big decision for us and for me it was
also very emotional. A few years past I had suffered a tragic loss
with a cat I had adopted. I was unsure of whether or not I would be
able to open my heart up to another animal ever again. My husband and
I decided that we should maybe do some research first so we went to the
Petco in Highland. While we were there we noticed that there were dogs
being showcased for adoption. As soon as I noticed the black and brown
dog with little floppy ears named Mya, I knew she was the dog we were
taking home. We discussed with the foster parent what kind of
personality traits we were looking for in a dog and Mya was everything
we wanted.
The
first couple months were a real adjustment and we wondered if we had
gotten in over our heads. She was six months old but still was not
completely house broken and we were having difficulty disiplining her.
We both took Mya to a training class and gradually made progress
becoming better parents and getting her to listen to us. Soon after,
Mya was fully adjusted to our home and had made us a family. I cannot
even imagine our home without her.
Mya
has a lot of lovable qualities. She will not go into her crate; she
would rather sleep on top of it, just like Snoopy. At times she sleeps
in our bed but has to be under the covers. She has lots of doggie
friends and is very good with kids. Mya brings so much joy and
happiness to our lives and we are so grateful for having found her.
Thank you to everyone at Treasured Friends for connecting us with our baby girl.
Thank you,
Heather Bender (& Jeffrey Bender)
